Singing Group

Here's an article about Amy's group in Time Off.

The Gentlemen

TRAGICALLY IRONIC FEM POP GROUP THE GENTELEMEN RECENTLY CAUGHT UP WITH LUKE HUDSON TO DISCUSS RECORDING THEIR LATEST OEUVRE TO DATE.“It has felt as though we've been in hiding for the past eight weeks as some kind of fugitives,” singer Amy Costello explains. “We’ve been writing and playing a lot, making friends with industry people we don't particularly like, and taking recreational drugs and things of that stereotypical calibre. It’s hard though because we are recording on an old cassette player from the 70s. The sound is extremely dodgy – you can hear my mum screaming obscenities and athletes on the television in the background. We were recording at the Gold Coast conservatorium with its million dollar studios but basic is better and I think people appreciate that except for radio stations, venues, producers and fans.”The band’s sound, sensationally and creatively illustrated by Costello, is a sensation she describes as ‘having the end of a cotton tip lodged in your inner ear.’ “Other well-known acts from whom we derive inspiration have also used the cotton tip metaphor – Elliott Smith, Big Star, The Shins, Bright Eyes. Enough name-dropping, but really, the music we like is what brought us all together in the first place and you can most certainly hear its influence in the music we play. As far as songwriting goes, Sammy is currently the sole songwriter but we have recently embarked on a more communal method. Sammy is the kind of girl you would look at and assume she keeps old chicken under her bed. She tends to be weird with her songwriting – her songs that sound happy are actually her most depressing. She has a way of describing society from a completely withdrawn perspective.”Who: The GentlemenWhere & When: Hi-Fi Bar Friday Sep 4, CafĂ© Checocho Friday Sep 18, Ric’s Bar Saturday Sep 26, The Zoo Saturday Oct 10
